Ravishing Red

You may not be familiar with Spinel but you have in fact seen it many times ......... For the large red gemstone in the Imperial State crown of Queen Elizabeth II is not a ruby but  a spinel...........

The term spinel is derived from the Latin , ‘spinella’, meaning ‘little thorn’, referencing the  sharp points of the crystal.

The earliest spinel gem dates from 100 BCE & was discovered in a Buddhist tomb.
